Chemoreceptors and feeding in calanoid copepods (Arthropoda: Crustacea).

چکیده
Ultrastructural studies of the mouthparts of the calanoid copepod Diaptomus pallidus have revealed the presence of numerous chemoreceptors, and the apparent absence of mechanoreceptors. The setae contain no muscles, and the setules are noncellular extensions of their chitin wall. This allows a new insight into the selective feeding of zooplankters.

Calanoid copepods, feeding currents, and the role of gravity.
Feeding currents of free-swimming calanoid copepods, observed through an expanded krypton laser beam and a back-focus dark-field optical system, show that these planktonic animals generate a double shear field to help in detecting food. The interrelation between flow field, perception of food items, and body orientation explains why these animals are generally negatively buoyant.
متن کاملA New Tantulocaridan ( Crustacea : Maxillopoda ) Parasitic on Calanoid , Harpacticoid and Cyclopoid Copepods
Several life-cycle stages of a new genus of Tantulocarida (Crustacea: Maxillopoda), parasitic on three orders of copepods, are described from Okinawa, South Japan. This is the first record of a tantulocaridan on cyclopoid and calanoid hosts. Nipponotantulus heteroxenus n. gen., n. sp. was also found on at least four families of harpacticoid copepods (including both interstitial and epibenthic s...
متن کاملCopepod feeding currents: Food capture at low Reynolds number1
High-speed motion pictures of dye streams around feeding Calanoid copepods revealed that these important planktonic herbivores do not strain algae out of the water as previously described. Rather, a copepod flaps four pairs of feeding appendages to propel water past itself and uses its second maxillae to actively capture parcels of that water containing food particles. The feeding appendages of...
متن کاملDistribution of some calanoida (Crustacea: Copepoda) from the Yucatán Peninsula, Belize and Guatemala.
Southern Mexico and Central America have many water bodies of different morphology and water chemistry with an interesting zooplankton fauna, originating from North or South America. A set of 63 samples, taken in 2005 and 2008, from water bodies of the Yucatan Peninsula karst, Belize and Guatemala, were studied for the content of calanoid copepods. Old and recent literature was used to determin...
متن کاملAnnual production of fish larvae and their prey in relation to size-fractionated primary production (Scotian Shelf, NW Atlantic)*
The annual cycles of abundance of fish larvae and their zooplankton prey were analysed in relation to the biomass and production of size-fractionated phytoplankton on the Scotian Shelf (North-west Atlantic). Outside the spring bloom of large (>5 ìm) phytoplankton (February to April), the small-sized fraction of phytoplankton (<5 ìm) contributed the bulk of total primary production. The producti...
